once again, the Lagunitas Creek

With all the recent rains my beloved Lagunitas Creek has gotten faster, wider, and deeper. It's roar has gotten louder, and I'm pretty sure if I fell in I might get even wetter...

Oh, here's that same mossy tree I showed you a week or two ago. Right now it's residing right on the edge of the water -- another big rainstorm will flood it's base.

On Monday our morning temperature had dropped to freezing, and maybe just a bit below. I had a hunch that steam might be rising off the creek.

Since I rarely use a tripod I am often forced to use wide lens apertures, and this results in a very limited depth-of-field -- the range of in-focus parts of the image is limited, giving good visual separation between the front and rear of the image.

Continuing on the out-of-focus background topic --
Had I put my camera on the tripod, I may have been able to take a long exposure at a small f-stop and thereby have everything in focus from front to back -- but the photo would look horrible because everything would be a jumble. The selective-focus simplifies the photo, in my opinion.

I am slowly learning that same belief of the selective-focus as you put it. I've been working with a monopod lately. It is limiting the up and down motion but I still feel I am waving my long lens around like a band conductor. Just need more practice.
Pretty fog rising off the creek. Your technique works well with me and my non techie ways.
Great captures. I like the limited depth-of-field, sure makes the subject pop.
I also use a monopod, occasionally, and when I think to grab it.
Thanks EVERYBODY for the comments -- appreciated...
