I'll be back in 1 day -- Re-runs in my absence

I'm off on vacation, exploring the mid-California coast, eastern California, the Alabama Hills, Bristlecone Pine, Death Valley, and as far into Nevada as I dare venture, but I'll be back October 1 hopefully with a lot of new photos from my adventure.

Sooooooooo, I have scheduled 30 "automatic" posts for the 30 days of September. Didn't want you to forget about the blog while I was gone.

Nuns of Perpetual Indulgence celebrate Easter

Oh Lord, how am I going to explain the Nuns of Perpetual Indulgence?
Lets just say that EVERYTHING you've ever heard about San Francisco is absolutely true.

Oh yeah, I realize that homophobia and the fear-of-the-unknown still has a grip on most of us, but really folks -- there is little danger.

So anyway, on Sunday I caught wind that the Nuns of Perpetual Indulgence was holding an Easter party in San Francisco's Dolores Park.

And what would an Easter bash be without an Easter bonnet contest...

Oh, it was a real bash with great bands and some riotous skits put on by the world-famous "Cockettes" and the amazing "Thrillpeddlers".

This fellow took top honors in the Easter bonnet contest. A cash prize was awarded but the kindly gentleman donated his prize money back to the Sisters. The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence do a tremendous amount of charity work throughout San Francisco, granting thousands of dollars each year to needy Bay Area causes.

foggy pines, Hawk Hill, GGNRA

A big "shout out" to my old high-school buddy, Tim J. of Buffalo, New York. In our correspondence over the years we have often discussed the foggy trees in our old hometown of Pacific Grove, California. If you want fog, you want to go to Pacific Grove, California!

click photo for full-size image

The ethereal quality, of course is lovely -- but if you have to live in drippy fog day after day after day it can get just a bit depressing. Eventually webs begin to grow between your toes, and if you are so inclined you just might also start growing moss under your chin.

But I still love it. It's cool when the rest of the world is sweltering in heat. It's our natural air-conditioner, and it's FREE. Give me fog, give me lots of fog.

So, as you can see, I had a delightful early morning up on Hawk Hill. If you want directions, it's the highest hill within the vicinity of the Golden Gate Bridge. You can't miss it -- unless it is shrouded in fog... Yuck, yuck...
NOTE:   Earlier this year the GGNRA decided that these pines were inconsistent with the original landscape. The day I discovered my beloved trees ALL cut down, was a sad day indeed. I contacted GGNRA HQ and they sent me a lengthy PDF explaining the natural ecology of the Hawk Hill area--its conclusion: cut 'em down. Email me if you would like to read the report.

Now, if I can get my butt in gear I just might be able to make it out this morning in time to view the sunrise.

And I know, with no clouds in the sky, that today's sunrise is going to probably be a little less than spectacular...

Well, water pretty-much kicked everybody's butt again this past Winter and Spring in this otherwise beautiful United States of America of ours. Here is water in more bucolic times, playing a goofy trick by standing on it's head.

A few miles downstream the water has a chance to do a bit of introspection.

life will have to go on without Kitty

BLAST-FROM-THE-PAST
AphotoAday post from August 1, 2011

It was a great and wonderful 12 years that Kitty and I were together, but I knew her from the day my upstairs neighbors brought her home from the animal shelter as a kitten. About four years later my neighbors moved on and couldn't take Kitty with them, so I was delighted that Kitty could come live with me in my humble abode.

And what fun we had! Kitty's favorite toy was just a wadded-up piece of paper, but one Christmas I remember giving her a knotted-up shoelace which she thought was the best fun ever.

And Kitty was a bit of a "foodie" -- she was the cat that absolutely adored a little piece of raw corn-on-the-cob. Okay, maybe I shouldn't tell you about the occasional bird or lizard with which she supplemented her diet. Yum.

Read all about Kitty's love of corn here.

A little over four weeks ago Kitty disappeared. She had been slowing down a bit, but still was happy and seemed healthy.

So, with the neighborhood alerted, Kitty's remains were found on a steep hillside about 75 yards to the west. It had been three weeks so the Turkey Hawks and Coyotes had pretty much cleaned up after her, but I was able to gather the remaining parts of her to bury out by our fig tree. And there she will remain forever, in my heart...

questions of the Lagunitas Creek

As many times as I visit her, my beloved Lagunitas Creek seems to pose more questions than she answers. Oh, what jeopardy.

The beauty of the Lagunitas often gives me the answer -- and then am left to figure out the question.

Answer: Remains peaceful when there seems to be nothing but despair and chaos every other place on earth.

Question: What is the Lagunitas Creek.

When I posted this shot yesterday I wondered if I was going to be able to come up with any similar "new" photos to fill out the blog today...

...and after a brief search this morning I realized I would have to fall back on previous work. Normally, everything you see here is new, unless otherwise noted. Keeps me busy, or as my grandmother used to say; "no rest for the wicked". This was "shot" May 5, 2008 at Alpine Dam on my beloved Mount Tamalpais.

And I "shot" this April 20, 2010. Which reminds me of a little story Brigitte Carnochan related to our class of bookmaking students a while ago -- a story about Ruth Bernhard, who evidently hated hearing people using the terms "shoot", "shot", and "shooting" SO much that she demanded that anyone who used those words in her presence pay 25 cents, which she collected in a mayonnaise jar and donated to charity when the jar was full. Anyway, Ruth Bernhard died years ago but by now I suppose I now owe that mayonnaise jar some serious cash.

We've had a lot of fog and a lot of completely blank and blue skies, but on Friday it looked like there might be some possibility of a colorful sunset.

Jets had been tracing through the skies all afternoon, and I think some of the cloud activity was initiated by their exhausts.
