Well, after I used this photo as yesterday's header I thought I should make an effort and find out the name of this noble plant -- after all, it chooses some of the prettiest spots to spread it's roots... Well, I haven't done my research -- can anybody help me out with the name?
UPDATE: this plant is Kniphofia, or torch flower.
Thanks to Anna for the botanical name
((( See today's Daily-Duo for two more photos of this plant )))

Like to get sand in your shoes? Like to accidently get your feet wet by not paying attention to the surf? If you answered yes to one or both -- then Rodeo Beach is for you...
((( No, I still haven't found out why they named the beach "Rodeo" )))

But the only drawback of visiting such a beautiful area is having to share it with the occasional film-crew. I'm still scratching my head, but this must have been an advertisement for horse blankets -- the horse had a whole neat stack of them on his back.

And yes, there is a sign to the contrary, but dogs run free...
Actually, this photo of the dog and the photo of the foamy-surf were taken last year and are from the Point Bonita set of what I call my "Big" site.

Beautiful shots Don. I have always called those flowers torches but I have no idea what the proper name is.
At first glance the next picture looked like a bear running along the crest of the hill. I really liked the perspective.
Looks like a really cool place.
I missed seeing the bear, but went back and found him. :-)
The flower is a Kniphofia, or torch flower. http://www.plantzafrica.com/plantklm/kniphofias.htm
One of my favorite parks in Victora, BC has beautiful beds of these. Not something that can grow in a lot of places in Canada! ;-)
Nice shots!
I was at Rodeo Beach yesterday and it was really cold and gray! Oh, well, at least no problem parking!
THANKS ANNA AND PHOTOWANNASUE --
Torch Flower sounds perfect, and I love the official name of Kniphofia -- now I just need to find someone to impress with my newfound knowledge... (I'd better write Kniphofia down on my wrist with a ballpoint pen or I'm likely to forget it)
And MARVIN -- yes it IS a cool place, but as TOMATE FARCIE found out on Saturday, it can get just plain nasty out there -- the place is a slave to the elements... (God, it was windy yesterday (Sunday)...
THANKS AGAIN, ONE AND ALL
Best regards, Don and Kitty
I'm sure the market for horse blankets must be huge to mount a TV campaign for them!
Beautiful place. I think the occasional inconveniences could be overlooked for how beautiful and peaceful it seems.
Your flower photos are great!
I was also at Rodeo Beach on Saturday with a couple of photographer friends. We were going to hike up to the abandoned cold-war radar station at Wolf Ridge, but it was cold and rainy - and it's about an hour hike each way.
So we goofed around shooting at the bunkers/batteries - got a lot of spooky pix. Was a lot of fun...
