Fairfax to Bolinas Road

The most beautiful road in MY little world is the twisty one that leads from my hometown of Fairfax, over the flanks of my beloved Mount Tamalpais, and ending in the mysterious and secretive little coastal town of Bolinas.

Believe it or not--along the way is an upside-down hill, floating in a lake!

Bolinas is far enough away from reality that the residents still have hope.

Just to the west of Highway 1, but why do no road-signs point to Bolinas?
Well, for over a decade signs pointing to Bolinas kept disappearing. CalTrans would replace them but they would disappear again. The "Bolinas Border Patrol" had a definite anti-visitor attitude. Eventually CalTrans just gave up on replacing the signs and the Sheriff never did catch the culprits who were stealing the signs.
Bolinas residents enjoy their isolation and can show an attitude towards tourists. They protect their privacy and have a low tolerance for the outside world. But most people who live here have beautiful hearts and generous souls. Most are spiritual. They sometimes delight in striking up philosophical discussions with tourists and the occasional photographer. No road passes through Bolinas--it's definitely the end of the line.
