On Tuesday I noticed a huge fog bank advancing over Mount Tamalpais, so knowing that this might be a good opportunity for some fog shots, I went up to what is usually the foggiest place on the mountain...   The trees were dripping -- almost like rain -- and it was kind of a struggle to keep my new camera (Canon5D with 70-300 zoom) dry, but I think I was rewarded with some fairly good shots...

Devil's Creek

It's sort of a mystery why such a Heavenly place ended up with the name of the Devil...   But here in California there is no shortage of Devilish places...   Devil's Slide is south of San Francisco on Highway 1, Devil's Postpile is an unusual formation of basalt rock in the Sierra Nevadas, and Devils Punchbowl and Devils Golfcourse are both located in Death Valley...   I can think of several more...

I did a little Googling and found this possible explanation:
"Place names evoking the Devil reflect a dominant attitude on the part of Euro-American settlers towards the New World during the migration into the wild West. The history of place names is based in mistranslation, deliberate insult and slur and the frustration of ranchers, as well as a Christian notion of the wilderness as the domain of the Devil."

Pope Valley Hubcap Ranch

Over a period of 30 years, Emanuelle "Litto" Damonte (1892 - 1985) with the help of his neighbors, collected more than 2,000 hubcaps...   A fence stretching a quarter of a mile is covered with a wild assortment of old hubcaps...   Spread around Hubcap Ranch are constructions and arrangements of hubcaps, bottles and pulltops which proclaim that "Litto, The Pope Valley Hubcap King", was here...
