Well, its been almost two years now without Kitty--she had a long and happy life. But you see, Kitty was a hunter--she shortened the lives of a plethora of birds, mice, and the occasional lizard.

Kitty's favorite spot to hunt was at the base of a low retaining wall where she could quickly spring up and catch some unsuspecting sparrow or scrub jay should they be so unfortunate as to land within her striking range.

Kitty finally stopped hunting in her later years, but before then, more times than I would like to remember, if I wasn't looking--Kitty would bring her kills into my bathroom and make a bloody mess out of the poor unfortunate, strewing feathers e-v-e-r-y-w-h-e-r-e in the process.

Tule Elk and Turkey Hawks at Point Reyes

The Tule Elk are located at the tip of the northern half of Point Reyes National Seashore. The herd is protected and managed by the federal government--their efforts are to save this noble species from extinction.

Tomales Bay -- fjord style fingerlet

The San Andreas Fault has created this long and narrow bay, about 30 miles north of San Francisco. This was once home to Indians, the Coast Miwok.




Sir Francis Drake is thought to have landed in nearby Drakes Estero in 1579. Members of the Vizcaíno Expedition found the Bay in 1603, and thinking it a river, named it Rio Grande de San Sebastian.

In the left corner is a small bit of a massive boulder, appropriately named Big Rock, sitting precariously at the top of a steep a hill in Lucas Valley.

Allen Ginsberg photos at Contemporary Jewish Museum

A few years ago architect Daniel Libeskind carefully repurposed a power substation originally built in 1881 to serve as a new Contemporary Jewish Museum. Libeskind pushed for a bit of whimsy, perhaps to present a stark contrast between old and new. The resulting madness is a monumental cube made with hundreds of riveted steel panels, unpainted and glistening in the sun, balanced precariously askew on the west corner of the building.

And of course, this odd design has become a Mecca for photographers. Safe to say that no two photogs ever shoot or process it in exactly the same way.

On Wednesday my friend Nancy Ewart who reviews and writes about art for Examiner.com snuck me into a press-preview for the Allen Ginsberg "Beat Memories" exhibit. Without doubt, Ginsberg was a much better poet (Howl, Kaddish, Reality Sandwiches, Death and Fame, Planet News, Cosmopolitan Greetings, etcetera) than he was a photographer--however, these images are rare glimpses into his life with his contemporaries (Cassidy, Burroughs, Robert Frank, Jack Kerouac, Ferlinghetti, Corso, Donlon, among others).

Reportedly these photos went unseen until a cataloger discovered them
in the archives of personal papers that Ginsberg had given to Columbia University, his alma mater. Exhibit is on view through September 8.

For the past 25 years I've been enjoying living with a plethora of deer here in Fairfax, California. And each year as regular as clockwork, at least one brand new set of fawns arrive on the scene. Unmolested and safe, they attend "deer school" right here in my yard and on the hillside below.

While Bay-to-Breakers runners undoubtedly have a bigger challenge, finding a place to park on the streets of San Francisco early in the morning is somewhat like finding a needle in a haystack.

Understandably, the mood of the race was a bit subdued compared to past years. These runners had just made it over Hayes Street Hill, the most difficult section of the route.

"The City" does have a gentle side. I ran-this-image-up-the-flagpole on my Facebook page the other day and it got an unexpected, but good reaction. CLICK for a streetlight and a blurry skyline that I snagged here last year.

Alcatraz and Angel Island are two major tourist draws, but San Francisco Bay also has a number of smaller islands, but are rarely visited.
