The days are getting shorter, which means the sun is coming up just a little bit later now. A photographer needs his dreams, and with the extra darkness I can squeeze a few more in.

Looking south across San Pablo Bay from China Camp is a fine view of the bedraggled Chevron Refinery. Despite a recent major fire (see photo) which sent thousands of residents gagging on the acrid smoke to local hospitals and bumped gasoline prices by 40 cents, this great belcher of evil continues to "refine" its mellifluous go-go juice.

But it is in these early hours that I find peace. China Camp isn't far distant, but in my mind's-eye this Chinese shrimping village is a million miles away.
