They call it Alpine Lake. Its along Fairfax-to-Bolinas Road, a twisty little adventure that few folks know about, except for local bicyclers and that goofy fellow with his camera.

The population of Marin County didn't begin to grow until the Golden Gate Bridge was completed in 1937, but Alpine Dam was built in 1912 by our local water district. I assume they had no idea the "lake" would fill-up into something so beautiful--they probably stood back, pridefully remarking; "Looks just like an alpine lake".

So, I'm just going to assume that the curious Madrone is the official tree of this area. Just like a rattlesnake, each year the tree sheds a skin of paper-thin bark in order to expand its girth.

That's what my tree in the front yard is doing now. I love all its curls and chips.
