thistles at China Camp

Over eons, thistles have evolved into a prickly something that a grazing animal would definitely not want to eat...

Thistles are fast-growers, invasive, and sturdy -- they're growing perilously close to a salt-water marsh in this photo.   Check back tomorrow for more about the Pickleweed growing in that marsh.

Wow! Are those poppies in the first thistle photo? Looks like a Granville Redmond painting from long ago...

Wonderful stark quality to thistles. I sure love how they look in photographs but ouch if backed into.

HI BRAD -- Nope, those aren't poppies, but some sort of hairlike grass that grows with the pickleweed -- you never notice it until this time of year when it turns this bright orange color.   I was taking a closer look at it and it uses the pickleweed for support -- I'll have to show a photo tomorrow...

AND YEP, PHOTOWANNABE SUE, I've backed into more than one thistle, for sure...
