spire, Marin Civic Center

I wanted to fool you into thinking that this was some sculpture in the Asian Art Museum, but where it is displayed -- the Marin County Civic Center -- is sort of a museum of architecture in it's own right.

No, I didn't shoot this at night -- the black is Photoshopped...

Frank Lloyd Wright came up with the original design for Marin Civic Center and presented his concept to the community at a meeting on April 28, 1958.   Cheaper and more expeditious designs could have been used, but Marin residents wanted something really far-out and original.

I suppose they had everything pretty well planned out, but I can imagine the construction guys did a lot of head-scratching when they were building this wild layout.

So what is the spire meant to represent?   I think it must be our aspirations...   The Civic Center was built in the late-fifties -- a time of great prosperity and growth -- rockets were reaching for the stars -- and it looked like peace and tranquility just might be possible...

If you type in Marin Civic Center into the Blogger search box you'll find my previous posts of the Marin Civic Center, including the construction time-line.

I just love the pix of the Civic Center you have on your Big site. I'd be curious to know who actually goes to the civic center for anything fun, but that's besides the point ;) nice building indeed. FLW sure did nice stuff.

HI TOMATE FARCIE -- Hey -- I thought of something that (might) qualifiy as fun -- getting a marriage license -- but of course, being a confirmed bachelor (although I like to think there is still hope, and for better or worse) I have never had to get a marriage license...

And sometimes good things happen at the Civic Center... I have always found the employees especially friendly -- when I was there last week one of the maintenance guys asked me about my picture-taking, and of course we had a nice little conversation... One day one of the Supervisors stopped to tell me where I could get a good shot...

Brad, when you go up 101 North towards, it's right after San Rafael, on the right. Can't miss it.
