If I had to hazard a guess at the age of this advertising on the side of Lagunitas Grocery, I'd estimate the sign to be about 100 years old by now.
I clearly remember the sign from when I shared an apartment in this tiny town of Lagunitas, 44 years ago when the Lucas Valley Dairy was in its last days, but still milking cows.
By the early 1970's the dairy and land went up for sale. George Lucas purchased the dairy with money he had made from "American Graffiti", tore it down, and began building facilities for his film empire--LucasFilm.
It is purely coincidental but probably convenient that George Lucas ended up in Lucas Valley. Some of our younger Marin County residents must erroneously think Lucas Valley was named in honor of the movie mogul.

Moving on, but still deep in the past, here we are in Berkeley near the corner of Addison and Oxford. BE-1927 is a telephone number, not a date, but the sign could have easily been painted in the 1920's.
This is not a new photo--I snapped it about four years ago.

Which direction and how many miles to Paradise?
This is not a new photo either--it is from earlier this year at the historic Montara Lighthouse, roughly 20 miles south of San Francisco.

Love the old wall advertisements. It makes me sad when they are gone for good.
