Although they never needed to be put to the actual test, the remains of numerous defensive gun emplacements dot the entrance to San Francisco Bay. Point Bonita has been swarming with military activity dating way back to the Civil War. During the height of the Soviet threat the ante-was-upped to include a launch-site equipped with nuclear-tipped Nike-Hercules medium range missiles.

Today this area is part of the vast Golden Gate National Recreational Area.

I share, but I consider the area to be my personal photographic playground.

There are compositions to be found in the old dead Cypress. In one direction is the Golden Gate Bridge with San Francisco beyond. In the other directions are spectacular views out to sea and up and down the California coastline.

And just temporarily--the missiles have been defused. The big guns remain silent. Birds soar. Waves crash. Surfers surf. Ships come and go. Artful and ghostly Cypress trees bleach in the hot afternoon sun.
