up and over Telegraph Hill

Next time you're feeling like a mountain goat, head for San Francisco's Telegraph Hill -- just look for the endless stairs up and over one of the steepest hills in town.   I don't have a photo, but at the top of Telegraph Hill is Coit Tower.   I DO have photos of the artwork inside, however.

Filbert and Sansome is at the base of the Filbert Steps.   It's a long walk up but I find that if I stop frequently enough (to shoot photos, of course) I am able to regain my wind to tackle the next bit.   Be ready to be shamed -- some folks run up and down these steps for exercise.

The stairs are impressive for their length, their wonderful views of San Francisco, the well tended gardens on either side, and the beautiful art deco buildings along the way.

Another great set of steep stairs is the Greenwich Street Steps, just west of the Filbert Steps.   A good plan is to take one set of stairs up and the other back down, but on this little expedition last week I continued over into North Beach.

North Beach is just a bit rough around the edges but there's usually something unusual to stumble on.   Keep an eye out for accordions -- they can be dangerous...

I loved your photos of this area Don. I had the good luck to be able to visit San Francisco a year ago, visited the Coit Tower and saw those magnificent murals inside. Hope to get back one day.

I really like the table setting shot. The wine glass is crystal sharp...no pun intended. Well done. We were planning a ride down to the city this weekend but with this rain I may put it off for a more photo friendly day. No doubt you will be out anyway and get some wonderful rain pics.

I love the character of the accordian picture. The quirkiness of the notes on the pealing wall just makes the composition perfect.

THANKS EVERYBODY -- And Photowannabe Sue -- you know, I had that accordion photo up as the banner yesterday until about 10:30PST when I started having second thoughts about it. I am SO bad at selecting my own photos but have been getting some good feedback.

Someone really messed up that window with glass-etch liquid -- I just don't get it -- regular spray paint graffiti can be painted over but this glass-etch stuff is more or less permanent. Kind of messes up my photo too, although I did a bit of Photoshop cloning and was able to clean it up a bit.

Did you ever find "Barbary Lane" from the Tales of the City? Hint, you're not very far.

It's actually on Russian Hill, not Telegraph Hill, but it's not very far and the views from up there are phenomenal. (you might want to leave your tripod at home that day because it's a steep climb).
