During the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake the double-decker Cypress Freeway "pancaked", killing 42. The failure of the structure was attributed to inadequate design standards capable of withstanding a 6.9 to 7.1 shaker.

Doyle Drive has the same type of construction that failed on the Cypress Freeway structure, only the Doyle Drive reinforced concrete is older.

I should have stopped to count the number of cranes and pile-drivers working on the project, but four of them are in this photo.

Yeah, that re-bar fabrication ought to do it.   I don't know the first thing about this sort of thing but it looks adequate to me.   We can thank our lucky-stars that the Feds are picking up the check for most of the financing.

After all, we DO need our expensive gravity-defying roadways built in the sky, don't we?

Steel I-beams, neatly stacked and standing by.

They are tireless workers when pressed into service.

Honestly, you must have the most exciting life ever! I would love to have the time to travel around, taking pictures of everything and changing the mundane and ordinary into a work of art. I'm very jealous ;)

Well, I'll tell you, Emmy, I've worked at some of the most mundane jobs this world has to offer and all of them have been pretty much a big waste of time. It's only by sheer luck that I was able to retire just a bit early -- enjoying it immensely. Being out and enjoying it is almost a responsibility -- am on my way out the door now.

your abstract crisp view of such machineries is quite amusing. I love that 2nd shot. so rad
