Armed with chalks, kneepads, sunscreen, and a gridwork diagram; a small army of local artists took over three blocks of San Rafael this past weekend for the 17th annual Italian Street Painting Festival.

Some of the artists with ambitious designs got an early start on Friday, but by Saturday the normally drab streets were filled with color and the exciting bustle of creativity.

Some artists were tackling the vastness of the whole wide world...

...other artists were carefully calculating it's vast scale in bits and pieces.

Thanks for visiting. Check back tomorrow -- I'll have more.

HI MULLEH -- Me too... I've heard that all it takes is a lot of practice to become proficient with drawing, but I think a lot of skill must also be involved.

Very nice! I especially love the Wallace and Gromit picture; that was very cool (and so was the elephant).

I've practiced drawing with chalk pastels before, and its so much harder than it looks. You have to give these artists SO much credit! But, your eye for capturing their art is also a skill in itself.!

HI EMMY -- Oh cool, I didn't know those two characters had names -- I'll have to Google for them and see what it's all about...

And yes, chalk pastels is not for the faint of heart -- I'm not an artist, but I worked in an art supply store for many years and got to know a lot of pastel artists -- they are a special breed.
