"A"rtwork -- it's ABC Wednesday

Most visitors to San Francisco explore Chinatown's Grant Street, but few probably discover the "other end" of Grant Street, across Broadway Street, leading north -- eventually ending up at a long steep set stairs below that other San Francisco attraction, Coit Tower.

On the way you will skirt North Beach, peer into little shops selling handcrafted eastern objects, tiny but upscale clothing botiques, a music store with notes painted on the exterior, another music store (just off Grant on Green Street) with it's windows plastered with stickers and a tuba hanging over the entrance, an art gallery with the mysterious name of Live Worms, a few residential hotels, a laundromat, bars and dives of all descriptions, bistros where the locals sit outside and enjoy their smokes and morning coffee, and even a little grocery store that probably hasn't modernized since 1940... --It's a great place for an early morning stroll with a camera...   See you there...

Dear Donald,

Your photos make me dream of San Francisco that I only know from films! :-)

I've never been to the USA because I wasn't curious at all to discover your country. Our TV channels in Turkey show hundreds of American series and films since my childhood, and I always thought "What is there to discover in the USA? They show everything on TV!".

So I traveled around the world, from Latin America to China but have not yet visited the USA.

But now, after seeing your beautiful photos, I say "Why not? Maybe a little trip to New York next year...".

This means for me the end of a taboo! :-)

Have a perfect Wednesday!

Best regards,

Müge

Great photostory! I love how you find things that the average eye (like mine) wouldn't.

Sounds as if one could fill a couple of memory cards on that stroll. "Live" Worms is an intriguing name for a music store, but better for music than groceries.

Live worms? Ughhh.... No thanks, I've already had breakfast.

Great story to go with that shot, Don, thank you! :)

(Just a little side bar for Muge, if I may:

There are *many* things to discover in the USA, even if you think you've seen it all in the movies. Walking cities like NY or San Francicso are fun (I'm sure some people would like to argue the point that NY is fun with me, but I insist ;).

If you'd rather drive, there are magnificient areas in the States, depending where you want to go. Do you like mountains, deserts, open spaces, large bodies of water? OK, take Las Vegas for instance. I'm not a huge fan of the place, honestly, but I can assure you that seeing it in person is really completely different than seeing it in the movies. I think what is surprising to most people in Europe when they come to the States is the scale of things here, and that much you have to see in person.

You know the country is so big, most of us living here don't know it entirely (I would say actually very few of us know it entirely).

Anyway, please come visit, we'd love to have you! :)

Those are my sentiments exactly, like Tomate said seeing is really experiencing.
Love your shots here Don. Not too sure about the Live Worms place but it would make me get my camera out.

Somehow I missed you over at the new site - I've been link hopping.

When your page loaded the first thing I saw was the photo of the cereal. As I have not had my breakfast yet today (and it's almost noon) your photo made me even hungrier! Now I need to go eat! BTW, here in Az that sign would have to say, "Live Crickets"! Love the cereal photo.

San Francisco is one of my favourite places to visit. So much to see and do there - but I must admit I haven't been to that end of Grant St. Will have to do that next time. :D

I have to stop and comment. The last few posts are great. I need to get back to SF and the bay. Great fog shot. Art is vibrant. Had cereal for breakfast.

How's the Printer?
