Art at the Marin County Fair

Yeah kids, that's probably some great advice -- don't be a pothead. And personally, I'd highly recommend staying away from alcohol too -- some people, like me, just can't handle it.

Well, of course the highlight of the Marin County Fair for me this year is the photography exhibit, and although I managed to get two of my six submissions accepted for hanging, this is one of my prints that didn't quite make the cut.

CLICK and CLICK to see the prints I succeeded in having hung. The exhibit had over 900 entries and only one third of those were accepted for hanging, so I am happy with my two out of six -- although I got four out of six accepted last year and even came home with a big green ribbon and $50 as a special award for journalism for this print.

But I SO wanted the "Legalize Marijuana" print to be hung, and I think the judges really missed the mark by not hanging it -- the issue is on the November ballot here in California so I thought this print would be timely. But noooooooo way -- the hanging of this print was not to be.

When I was dropping off my prints several days ago I'm afraid I probably offended the really nice lady who was helping me sort things out. When she saw the print she made an audible gasp, and a few moments later she softly muttered to another one of the volunteers; "Oh, I give up"...

As usual, the adult art division was great (((no photo snapping allowed))) but I always really enjoy looking at all the kids art -- sometimes their imagination and creativity beats the socks off of the oldsters.

I like going to the Fair when it first opens because that's the day when you'll find artists at various locations painting up a storm.

They call it "plein-air painting" -- just a pretentious French term that simply means "painting out of doors".

Happy to hear you got 2 hung. I think they missed out on a great journalistic photo from you.
Love that children's art piece too. Great simple lines and workmanship.
Sure wish I could paint and sketch. It really looks like a lot of fun. I guess I have to stick with my little camera though.
Have a great weekend Don.

How did I miss these two beautiful shots of yours? I looked and looked for your work... I had a similar experience with my submissions. I submitted one called American Beauty with two lovely young ladies walking past an unconscious man on the sidewalk with their shopping bags full... I thought it made a great statement about our American Idol culture. In fact, the two photos that were rejected were, to my eye, better photos than what got in. But, at the end of the day, I'm thrilled that anything of mine got in. I didn't win anything but I did get an honorable mention for one. So that was nice. You should have won something big for the sunrise over the lake. That is a heart stoppingly beautiful photo. Thank you.
