Unless you are driving in it and can't see where you're going -- fog is a very beneficial gift from nature that provides the Bay Area with an efficient, free, and highly predictable source of air-conditioning during the summer months...

Gate 5, Sausalito
click photo for full-size image
Most everybody knows that Sausalito has houseboats (the ones you can see from the freeway), but what a lot of folks don't realize is that there are two types of houseboats -- the nice expensive ones to the northwest, and these funky ones at the Gate 5 Cooperative...
Not a very colorful name -- Gate 5 -- but that's what the Bechtel Corporation named it back in 1942 when they operated a HUGE shipyard in the area called Marinship, building Liberty Ships for the war effort... My Grandfather worked at Marinship, so when I visited the Jeremiah O'Brien, a Liberty Ship docked at Fisherman's Wharf, I had to tell the docents all about it... --Unusual for me to start up a conversation, but I did...

That old truck has certainly seen better days, but now has a new and exciting job advertising the Frambezi Farm Stand, on Highway 1, just north of Santa Cruz... In the lower photo, those are strawberries in rows 8 through 14 from the right...

Angel Island
click photo for full-size image
Angel Island, smack dab in the middle of San Francisco Bay, has a colorful history as the "Ellis Island of the West"... From 1910-1940, Chinese immigrants were detained and interrogated at Angel Island Immigration Station. U.S. officials hoped to deport as many as possible by asking obscure questions about Chinese villages and family histories that immigrants would have trouble answering correctly. Many were returned to their homeland if the inspectors suspected even the slightest degree of mental or physical weakness... For many, Angel Island was a heartbreaker -- but for others it was the beginning of their American adventure, which regretably often ended up in their exploitation...

special message for Photowannabe Sue -- thanks for showing me how to spell "mussels"... Spelling, and the English language in general has always baffled me...

O.k., here is a fool-proof way to tell if you are young or old... If you played with Legos when you were a kid, then you are young -- but if Legos hadn't yet been invented when you were a kid, then you are an old fart -- just like me...

egrets and pickleweed
click photo for full-size image
Pickleweed is an inter-tidal plant with the unique ability to grow on the edge of saltwater bays... For the water it needs, the plant uses a membrane to filter out most of the salt... Any salt that does pass into the Pickleweed gets stored in bulbous-like extremeties that eventually fill with salt, die, and fall off...

relaxing at the creek

Now, before anybody freaks out, rest assured that I regret invading the privacy of the folks in the top photo sunbathing at the Lagunitas Creek, but I snapped them in the same innocent spirit that I would have snapped a deer or a cow... No, I don't go looking for this sort of thing, and I wouldn't take my camera to a nude beach -- but of course I doubt if I will ever intentionally go to a nude beach, but you know, accidents do happen...
