Fog is a many splendored thing

Fog is fickle and usually highly uncooperative. Often when I'm in the mood to make a photograph there is either too much, or not enough. For this image (above) I needed to hike about a mile to get slightly above the fog--the location was near "Big Rock" in Lucas Valley, just north of San Rafael.

But then on a different day and at a different location... Take colorful names like "Lands End" and "Deadman's Point", throw in a former cemetery and add to the mixture an abundance of fog, and you've got all the ingredients necessary for one of Donald Kinney's early morning photo walk-arounds.

So anyway, a few days ago instead of heading directly out on Land's End Trail I decided to explore the fog shrouded pines and cypresses at the golf course. This is the former site of City Cemetery which was moved to Colma just south of San Francisco in the early 1900's. Between huffing-and-puffing up the hilly terrain I paused to listen and feel for spirits. This lone monument, a remaining fragment of the cemetery, seemed to speak volumes.

This twisted and gnarled cypress spoke without saying a word.

CLICK for what I call my BIG site.

That's my home golf course and those are great photos. The spirits are still definitely out there as most of the bodies were NOT transported to Colma, no matter what anyone says. The first hole still has a Chinese maesoleum surrounded by trees right in front of it which one should avoid at all costs. Don't disrespect the place or you'll definitely have a terrible round of golf.

Oh, and that monument isn't actually from the cemetery. In a sense, it's a minor Coit Tower, put up by a woman who was in love with Seamen and those who are lost at sea. I'm not making this up, check out the inscription next time.

Hi SF MIKE -- Thanks for the information on the monument. I've got to go back and read the inscription. Also have got to respectfully visit the Chinese mausoleum near the golf club house. Maybe the spirits won't approve of my camera -- we'll see.
And yes, I did know that a whole lot of bodies weren't moved to Colma--yesterday I was reading that in 1989 during construction work at the Legion of Honor they discovered 600 bodies in what is presumed to be the pauper's section of the cemetery.
