exploring black and white

Photography is a strange kind of animal... Sort of the lesser step-child of the traditional printmaking arts, but in the past several years the photo craft has gained more respect in galleries and museums. Pix-takers have multiplied like rabbits. Of course, digital imaging and Photoshop make it--oh so easy...

You will hear all sorts of theories, but with photography it is mostly monkey-see-monkey-do. But there are choices to be made and techniques to be dabbled in. Monochrome still has a place. At times, b&w is the best choice.

A little photo tip I've learned--when a color image is just not living up to expectations, try improving it by converting the image to black-and-white. You might be surprised and/or happy with the results.

That's an interesting idea. Thanks for the tip. And Happy Thanksgiving!

just because technical options multiply doesn't mean more people have the cultivated or native taste to choose the best of them....as in graphic design it still takes an aesthetic refinement to create real effective focus, balance, and artistic use of these new media! you demonstrate that refined eye, Mr. Kinney, whichever tools you are using...

more photo technologies don't equate to more artistic results. It is your native/ aesthetic eye /training that results in great images regardless of equipment--as in photography, in graphic art I have seen lackluster creativity/execution regardless of technologically possible media; just keep " looking" !!!!! & "editing" & viewers will be satisfied!

Hi PATRICIA WILSON -- Well stated about technology and all the trappings we photographers get ourselves into. --On the artistic side, I think the love I have for the subjects I photograph has a lot to do with what I actually "see". But yeah, I have worked in art related fields all of my life (although I do not call myself an artist) and some influences were bound to have rubbed off. And yes, I do do a whole lot of "looking". That is where the real fun for me is. And I DO think my primary purpose with all of this IS fun for the old guy with lots of spare time on his hands.
