Lupine is everywhere

I swear I've never seen more Lupine than this year.

And the poppies are right there, helping out...

For some reason it's always difficult to photograph Lupine, but I always give it my best shot.   Getting all the parts in focus is almost impossible -- it's an open framed plant with no real center -- it's sort of like pieces of popcorn on a stem...

About eighty species of Lupine can be found throughout the world -- and yes, Lupine is also spelled Lupin.

Well, it probably doesn't get any prettier than this...
And this scene is different under all lighting conditions -- you ought to see it when the sky is painting a colorful sunset.

Benny Bufano mosaic / sculpture

E-Gods, so I shot the photo -- does that mean that I have to explain it?

Actually, last time I shot and showed this Benny Bufano mosaic-sculpture I had no idea who the artist was, but Janice, of http://sunsetstyle.blogspot.com was quick to research it and determine it is a Benny Bufano.   You would think they would have a plaque or something.

Beniamino Benvenuto Bufano (October 14, 1898 - August 16, 1970) was a California-based Italian American sculptor, best known for his large-scale -- usually granite -- monuments. His modernist work often featured smoothly rounded animals and relatively simple shapes.

Bufano was born in San Fele, Italy, but was brought to the United States by his family at the age of three. He spent his childhood in New York City and was educated by private tutors, eventually studying at the Arts Student League from 1913 to 1915. He first came to San Francisco to work on a sculpture for the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition, alongside Dirk Van Erp. Afterwards, he traveled extensively before returning to settle permanently in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Considered an outspoken radical at the time, Bufano chopped off his trigger finger and sent it to President Woodrow Wilson at the onset of World War I as a protest against the war. In addition to his work as a sculptor, he taught at the San Francisco Institute of Art (but was dismissed in 1923 because he was considered too modern), the University of California, Berkeley, and Oakland's California College of Arts and Crafts.

Some of his best-known works include the statue of Chinese leader Sun Yat-sen in San Francisco's Chinatown, his 93-foot (28 m) sculpture Peace in coastal Timber Cove (near Jenner, California) and his Bear and Cubs at Kauikeaouli Hale in Honolulu, Hawaii. Examples of his distinctive and large-scale work can be found throughout the San Francisco Bay Area, and there is a Bufano Sculpture Garden at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland.

San Pablo Bay

click photo for full-size image

San Francisco Bay covers a large area, so people generally think of it in three parts -- the South Bay, the "Central Bay" (surrounded by the three bridges), and San Pablo Bay in the north.

Top photo is from China Camp, just over the hill from San Rafael.
Civilization is close, but it usually seems a million miles away...

click photo for full-size image

This is a shot from Vallejo looking west across San Pablo Bay towards Mt. Tamalpais.   In addition to the Sacramento Delta water from the east, San Pablo Bay also receives a bit of water from the Petaluma Creek, and the Sonoma River which drains the Napa Valley.

San Pablo Bay isn't very deep -- in fact it's more like a pond than a bay.   I'd be very careful about parasites in fish that came out of San Pablo Bay, and I might even want to keep my eye on mercury and cyanide levels too.   Bon appetit...

Salt water intrusion into San Pablo Bay has increased over the past several decades to the point where the harvest of Bay Shrimp at China Camp has been reduced substantially.   More and more of the fresh water releases from the Sacramento Delta have been diverted for agricultural use in the Central Valley, slowing down the "flushing out" of San Pablo Bay.

open sesame

Hope you don't feel short-changed from the lack of text on yesterday's edition, but I got that far and something came up -- and I think I'll just leave it that way -- after all, I'm sure my words would fall short of the beauty of the flowers...

But yes, open sesame...   Be it a flower, or be it a landscape...   Ask that bird how it feels about wide open spaces...

And from high places the scenery opens up.   That's Bolinas Lagoon from up on Mount Tamalpais.

Yep, but it's six expensive dollars ($6.00) away.   The price of crossing the Golden Gate Bridge has climbed so high that I often pause at this spot and think about hawking my watch.

Next door to you or me might not be the best place for a facility that renders down the contents of restaurant grease-traps, so that's why Darling International ((( gotta love that name ))) makes it's home way out on Amador Avenue, in the Dogpatch area of San Francisco.
