Fort Point (part 3 of 3)

This shows the massive yet intricate brickwork that encase 103 gun-ports on three levels.   Fort Point is really quite a massive structure.   Together with cannons directly across the Bay, plus dozens of other pillboxes, lookouts and long-range guns up and down the coast, San Francisco was well defended -- although as I mentioned earlier, Fort Point was never put to the test of any invading navy.

I managed to get drafted into the Army back in the late 1960's at the height of Vietnam, but lucky me -- they shipped me off to Germany where I spent the rest of my two year military career pushing papers and hammering a typewriter.

And I couldn't help doing a lot of remembering while exploring the offices and living quarters of Fort Point -- they reminded me quite a bit of the old administration buildings at Giebelstadt, Germany.   I can almost see my ghost walking down this corridor on my way to deliver my Morning Report to the mucky-mucks at Battalion Headquarters.

So anyway folks, this concludes this three part visit to Fort Point, sitting directly under the south end of the Golden Gate Bridge.

But the joke is on me -- because I had never been inside this great and historic place.   It is a step not only back in time, but a trip to another place.   I'm not sure why it took me so long to get here -- but thanks to PhotowannabeSue for my inspiration to finally check out the old defensive position.   It's an amazing place.

Beautiful "graphic" shot of the girders of the GG bridge. Love that style of photography -- pure, simple, colorful.

Then the shot leading down the hallway of Fort Point .... it reminds me of a pencil sketch that I did in the in Toledo Museum of Art ... wonderful example of repetition.

Interesting information on Fort Point too. Thanks.

Really nice photos of Ft. Point - superb light and moodiness. Also really like the one of the window below with the scrawls in the dust - from the outside, I suspect.

Jeeez, I haven't been there in a long time. There's so much to shoot...

Many thanks for the mention Don. I do love the way you captured the feel of the place. Next time I go I will have to take pictures of the inside rooms too. I haven't done that for a long time. The Bridge seems to capture my attention instead.
Perhaps this summer it will be open weekdays too. Don't know, but it would be less crowded, but cold , windy and foggy. (sorry, but true)
