Following up on a tip from Caliber Group member Brad Evans, I headed over to San Francisco's Exposure Gallery Thursday evening to attend a reception and slide-show lecture by Eros Hoagland who has been covering some of the messier parts of this world since he first photographed the despair and violence after El Salvador's civil war in 1993.
I wasn't quite sure what to expect but I saw photographs that just about blew my head off. And in fact I DID view horrifying photograph of the blown-off head of an Iraqi female suicide bomber who had just taken dozens of others with her, rolling around in a bloody street. The image gives me chills this morning just thinking about it.

Eros Hoagland, in addition to El Salvador has covered gang and drug cartel violence along the U.S./Medico border, along with violence in Guatemala, Colombia, Haiti, and that little punctured football we call Iraq.
Hoagland has been a contributor to magazines such as Time, Newsweek, New York Times, Men's Journal, Frontline, Fader, Fortune, Forbes, People, Esquire, and Stern.

I suggest you visit Hoagland's website at: www.eroshoagland.com.
The reception and slide-show lecture was well attended. San Franciscan's schmoozing, at their finest. The event and refreshments were sponsored by the San Francisco Press Photographers Association.
Thank you very much. It was a sobering evening.

Whew, that must have been a powerful evening. Those kind of pictures are hard to get out of the replay mode in the mind.
Thanks for sharing a sobering look at the world.
Glad you were able to make it, Donald. Exposure Gallery is a really great place. A lot of excellent exhibitions and photo talks have been hosted there. I like the energy there being around other photographers. Hope to see you at the next one!
I saw Eros's show and Jim Goldberg's as well. Both were powerful presentations. Nice coverage.
