beauty is what I like to shoot

On Wednesday afternoon I noticed some dense clouds floating in over my home-town of Fairfax from the west, so I thought I had better put the pedal-to-the-metal and get my butt up on the ridge at Mount Tamalpais.

Except for one couple who stopped their car in the middle of the road to briefly chat with me about the remarkable light show that was going on out by the Farallon Islands, I was about the only soul up there soaking up the intense beauty.

The scene was changing by the moment, yet the streaming sunlight was a bit on the subtle side.   I suppose I was looking for sunrays that would look like thunderbolts, but it just wasn't in the cards.   Maybe another time.

So anyway, here's my sad story:

I've got this photo-buddy back in the mid-west who is a big fan of this area, so I reminded him to check my blog yesterday so he could see that first photo in the larger size as my banner.   Now, this fellow and I are the best of friends and we keep in pretty close contact, but when he returned my e-mail he didn't mention anything about the photo.   Well, I thought it was just an oversight so I wrote him and directly asked what he thought of the image.

My buddy replied that to be honest he doesn't like this sort of photograph.   Not something he would shoot.   I should have known -- he doesn't care for sunrises and sunsets either -- we've been all through this before.

So, why wouldn't a person -- any person -- not love sunrises, sunsets, or streaming sunlight?   Well, as he explained, he DOES love those things "in person", but he just doesn't care for photographs of them.   Go figure...

Actually, I think I know why my buddy doesn't care for photographs of such beauty -- he could be one of these arty types who thinks they can't deviate from their "style".   I suppose it's the intellectual approach to art -- and all I can do is shake my head.   The fellow -- with all due respect -- is really missing the boat in my opinion.

This is my beloved Mount Tamalpais as seen from just outside Fairfax, where I live.   Rather moody and dark as I was returning from the ridge -- the sun was going down and Mother Nature was getting ready for the drizzly day we had yesterday.

Well, I am a fan of beauty, sunsets and sunrises, both in person and photograph. I guess to each his own.
These pictures have so much movement and character to them. I love the one with the holes in the sky that drops the spots onto the water. Really cool. The moody Tam. shot is a favorite of mine too. It would make a good poster.

It's always much better in person, but after a while, the picture is almost as good. I love all the rays, but the most intriguing one to me is the second capture. No words for how cool it is.

I agree with both comments above, the second with the lights on the water is incredible. As for your friend, a side comment. I love what I create. Not everyone has the same feeling. It is difficult in the moment, but I respect their honesty. Please know, that YOUR work is tremendous in so many persons eyes. I appreciate all that you share!
