good morning Iris

On Thursday I spotted a treasure-trove of Douglas Irises on the Fairfax-to-Bolinas Road (about a mile east of Highway 1), but the pesky wind was blowing too swiftly to even consider stopping for a shot. I promised myself I would return -- so I did, early on Friday morning, and the wind was dead-calm. I guess sometimes a photographer has to just go the extra mile. Tough job, but someone has to do it. My pleasure!

mudhen at Phoenix Lake

All the while I was at Phoenix Lake I was trying to remember how many years it had been since I had last visited. And although Phoenix Lake is located in the shadow of Mount Tamalpais -- behind the exclusive but tiny town of Ross, just two towns from where I live -- I finally determined I hadn't been there for about 35 years. Shame on me, because it's a really great lake -- just not where I normally do my exploring, and parking is extremely limited. I promised myself I would be back. Some really great hiking trails are in the area.

clouds over Mt. Tam

Wednesday was a funny day for weather... All week the long-range forecast had been predicting light rain on Wednesday, and although some interesting clouds had been floating over all day, nobody expected any moisture out of them. About three o'clock the puffy white clouds turned to a solid gray and soon it began to lightly sprinkle. But then, about fifteen minutes later, the sun broke out in all it's glory and everybody was able to finish up the beautiful day.

Albers Flapjack Flour
click photo for full-size image
This great big sign is on the side of the Victoria Theater, near 16th. and Mission in San Francisco. Yes, the Albers brand has been in existence since 1895, but Albers was bought by Carnation in 1929, and Nestle bought Carnation in 1984. There is a good article about the Albers brand over at:
http://www.verybestbaking.com/products/albers/history.aspx
The Victoria Theater also has quite a colorful history. The theatre, built in 1908 as a vaudeville house, is now a city landmark and the oldest operating theatre in San Francisco. I seem to remember it as a raunchy striptease theater in the early '70's, but currently they are featuring "Spike and Mike" animated films -- proudly advertised as "sick and trashy". Tickets, anyone?

Ape Do Good Printing
click photo for full-size image
On Sunday my camera and I went for a little walk around San Francisco's colorful Mission District. I had a great time shooting the plethora of hispanic murals, but standing out from all of them was this business-front with a decidedly Japanese theme and a bit of humor in the sign. When I got home I Googled "Ape Do Good Printing" and found that this is one of San Francisco's very best screen printing shops. And no, Mr. Ape does not appear to be Japanese at all -- but from his photo he appears to be substantially larger and stronger than me, but I certainly would never call him an ape...
Ah yes, screen printing -- that takes me back a few years... I don't know why I feel I need to tell you this, but from 1968 through 1985 (with two years out for the draft) I worked for a small company that manufactured Versatex Textile Paint -- a water-base pigmented textile ink popular with silkscreeners and airbrush artists. I spent my days up to my armpits in large kettles of colorful mixtures with powerful odors.

A few days ago I went out to Chimney Rock at Point Reyes to check on how the wildflowers were coming along, but found that they have a few weeks to go before they are at their prime. But then I remembered a sheltered little area just off the road to Limintour Beach that always blooms earlier.
I'm not really set-up correctly to shoot closeups with this new lens (Canon 70-200 f-4 "L" series with I.S.) -- I was just using an old clip-on closeup lens that clips the corners (vignettes) when the lens is stopped down.

This is Mountain Theater on Mount Tamalpais, where thespians have been putting on cheesey plays, and some good ones (last year they did "Hair"), since 1923. The seating is a bit primitive -- most attendees know enough to bring cushions.

The day before yesterday my buddy over at Web-Pix was showing a photo of his old love -- his first camera -- so I decided to take a picture of my old Calumet 4x5 view camera, which was my main love back in my teenage days.
