Oh, I knew it was gonna happen. And it did. But it sure took a long while.

444 snaps, and about an hour earlier this was the scene. Gray and ominous.

I must have a million sunset photos taken from our house. And many are "sets" of photos from the same vantage point taken moments apart as the sunset reveals itself. It's hard to know when it is at its best, and its "best" lasts only seconds, so I keep snapping away. It's an obsession.

444 snaps, seriously?

Hi ZOOMIE -- you know, it is a rule I often break, but if I was to offer any advice about shooting sunrise or sunset I'd say shoot it after the sun has set and disappeared, or before the sun appears in the morning. Once the ball-of-fire appears, or is still there, it will "blow out" the colors and you won't have much detail in the high values. When I include the sun in my photos, I always stop my lens down two f-stops. Some photographers use a graduated neutral density filter, but that's too much fooling around for me.

And yes indeed, JOHN (SINBAD'S DAD)… 444 -- Yes indeed, of course I usually take 2 or 3 or more of the same general angle and sometimes fool with exposure. Not uncommon for me to fill up a 32GB memory card on one outing, which is about 1200 raw captures. In the past 22 days I've snapped nearly 10,000, of which I will only keep about 66. One snap only takes up about 20MB, but when I make them into a TIFF, they expand to about 80MB, and then I make 3 sizes of JPEGs, a 960x640, 640x427 and a 500x334. Then if I want to post it on Facebook I make another with a watermark ( donaldkinney.com ) You should get on Facebook, John--so much fun! Good place to promote your blog but privacy issues abound.

444 snaps? Wow! Really inspiring. I don't think I can do it like that. By the way, really nice picture. =)

Hi FAARIHIN -- oh, I know a lot of photographers who would criticize me for making so many snaps. One in particular who uses film and a Leica to do his street photography. But basically it is like sitting 10,000 chimpanzees down in front of 10,000 typewriters--eventually one or two might be able to bang out something decipherable. If I was using film, it would also be a different story.
