The seasons have been just about as confused as ME this year, but all of a sudden we have a rampage of wildflowers on display all across my beloved Marin County.

The California poppy (Eschscholzia californica), also called the golden poppy, is a perennial and annual plant, native to the United States, and the official state flower of California.   (source:  Wikipedia)

Between 1815 to 1818 the Russian Government sent Johan Friedrich von Eschscholtz; a physician, botanist, zoologist and entomologist; on an expedition to collect specimens in Brazil, Chile, California, the Pacific Islands, and on either side of the Bering Strait, Kamchatka, and the Aleutian Islands.

So, since Johan got there first, the California Poppy is named after him. Scores of plants are probably named after Eschscholtz, but it must have been quite an extraordinary discovery when he found the what we know today as the California Poppy. Few plants are more beautiful!

Poppys are abundant along the roads in Sonoma County and the side of our home where we scattered some seed last year. But it was just yesterday I discovered one lone poppy, the first, in my Annadel State Park.

Beautiful photographs. My favourite is the second image. I really like the horizontal you applied to it; it helps it stand out. Just wondering did you use any editing on these pictures?

These are absolutely the BEST photos that I've seen of California poppies ... soooo expressive. And to think that I know the photographer who did them! LOOOVE the movement from the breeze, and your use of shallow depth of field. If i had to pick a favorite of the three, I couldn't do it.
