excitement, adventure, and peril

I feel SO sorry for you folks who don't live on the coast -- you're missing the excitement, adventure, and peril of crashing waves.

But really, a person needs to be cautious of waves -- once-in-a-blue-moon a "sleeper" wave will come along and sweep out to sea anything in it's path.

When I take close-up photos of splashes I am always amazed to see how much sand and small rocks get swept up with the tide. This scouring action is what wears away the coastal rocks and cliffs.

So, enough excitement, adventure, and peril for one day -- I return you to your normal programming. Have a nice day! I think I'm going to go over to Chinatown this morning and see what kind of trouble I can get into.

Thanks SCOTT, and thanks TOMATO and yes my lens is 200mm, and I can even do 400mm with my tele-extender, but the image those lengths render aren't quite as "long" as most other DSLRs, because the Canon5D has a "full frame" sensor, roughly the same size as a 24x36mm piece of film. Other cameras have a "crop factor" which means their sensors are smaller, usually by a factor of 1.4 or 1.6. That makes them more telescopic than my camera and lens.

But yes, I try my best to be cautious -- I don't mind getting wet but the camera does. I was in a fairly safe spot, perched on a rock, but with the splashes coming in just close enough to make it rather exciting.
