Well folks, I won't have any new photos for two weeks...

It's a long and sad story, but to make it short -- I managed to drop my $1100 70-300 I.S. D/O zoom lens into San Francisco Bay yesterday morning...   It made a resounding plop when it hit the water...   R.I.P., zoom lens...

Amazing pictures. Sorry about the back luck with the lens. That's really sad and (to a new photographer like me) a scary story. Better luck in the future.

Oh no....that's horrible...makes me sick just thinking about it.
Not a cheap loss either.
Good shots though.

Thanks all -- I'm still sick to my stomach over the loss, but at least it was the lens that went into the bay and not me...

So, how does something like this happen?   Well, I was wearing mittens and I didn't realize I had pressed the lens release button, then when I twisted the zoom, the lens came right off...   I briefly struggled in an effort to catch it, but I think my mittens muffed my catch...   It's a heavy lens, and I certainly wasn't expecting it to drop...

Anyway, I think I'm going to buy a slightly different lens for the Canon5D this time -- maybe the f4 L series 70-200 I.S. without D/O... --Not as telescopic, but it's supposed to be a better lens... I've been noticing "pincushioning" and "vignetting" with the 70-300 D/O.. [diffractive optics allows thephysical length of the lens to be shorter]

Anyway -- I got out the old camera [Sony DSCF-717] and charged it up, so if I can get this darned cat off my lap, I might go out and see if I can shoot some pictures... This old Sony can probably still take good pictures, but the resolution isn't nearly what I get with the Canon5D...

Sorry to ramble on with all of this, but there you go... --Now, seriously, --if I can get this cat off my lap...
