The creeks are flowing again, everything is moist, and the mosses couldn't be happier.

Occasional Creek

I'm not sure if this little creek at Roy's Redwoods here in Marin County has an official name, but it only runs occasionally, so a few years ago I named it Occasional Creek...

I over-saturated the sky (only) to get some color and texture into it...   These over-saturated and grainy colors seem to be my new favorite technique...

San Francisco is fortunate to be home to a great mural artist, Bill Weber...   This one is across from the corner that topless star Carol Doda made famous (?) in the '70's -- Broadway and Columbus...

Purisma Creek

click photo for full-size image

Around the turn of the last century San Francisco had an insatiable appetite for construction wood, and loggers cut most all of the old growth redwoods in Purisma Canyon, located behind Half Moon Bay, about twenty miles south of San Francisco...   But the redwoods have since regenerated themselves -- sprouted from the roots of the cut trees...   Redwoods grow quickly, and even hundred-year-old redwoods are quite impressive...   A pleasant creek runs through the canyon...   It's a great place for a leisurely hike...   See you there...

I doubt if this "occasional creek" at Roy's Redwoods actually has a name, but that's what I call it...   It's been dry all year, so it's good to see it flowing again...

B&Ws from 42 years ago

Oh, I was quite a black-and-white photographer back when I was a teenager...   And, I was taking vertical shots -- something I very rarely do these days for some reason...   The fern was at Big Sur, and the lower shot is at Cannery Row in Monterey, my old hometown...

shot with the old camera

Saturday morning the rain cleared long enough for a quick trip to the Golden Gate Bridge, where I snapped this shot with the old [Sony DSC-F717] camera...

O.k., o.k., I fudged it a little bit...   The moon was too small in the shot of the bridge so I Photoshopped in a larger moon shot at maximum zoom...   Pretty sneaky, huh ?

Legion of Honor, San Francisco

click photo for full-size image

The Legion of Honor is a three-quarter-scale adaptation of the 18th-century Palais de la L├ęgion d’Honneur in Paris.

Constructed on a remote site known as Land's End, the Legion of Honor was completed in 1924, and on Armistice Day of that year, its doors opened to the public.
The museum is dedicated to the 3,600 California men who lost their lives on the battlefields of France during WW1.

The Legion of Honor was a gift to the City of San Francisco by Alma de Bretteville Spreckels, wife of sugar magnate Adolph Spreckels.   The Legion’s famous collection of Rodin sculptures--including the Thinker--was also donated by Mrs. Spreckels.

Lens Update:
My 70-200 f-4 "L" I.S. zoom lens will be arriving on Monday... It will be replacing the 70-300 f-4.5-5.6 I.S. D/O zoom that went swimming in San Francisco Bay on Christmas Eve...   It's supposed to be a really good lens, so I hope to have some new shots with it for you on Tuesday...

more Legion of Honor, S.F.

Well, I was afraid someone was going to ask for the details on these paintings and sculptures from the Legion of Honor and DeYoung Museum -- and Sean did ask -- so I've filled in a few details for the artworks that I have information on...   (I decided to shoot the nameplates when I was about half-way into the project)
Anyway, I don't have any information on the top painting,
but this is the nameplate info on the lower painting:

Baron Francois-Pascal-Simon Gerard
French, 1770-1837
La Comtesse de Morel-Vinde and Her Daughter, 1799
Oil on canvas
Museum Purchase, Mildred Anna Williams Collection
and William H. Noble Bequest Fund,
the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco
1979.8

Sadly, I didn't get a photo of the nameplate for the upper painting, but the lower painting is by:

Pieter Fransz de Grebber
Dutch, ca. 1600 - 1652
Christ at the Column, 1632
Oil on panel
Signed and dated lower right P. DG/1632
Mildred Anna Williams Collection, bequest funds of Henry S. Williams in memory of H.K.S. Williams, California Palace of the Legion of Honor
1995.51
