The sun was making a valiant effort to break through, but it was a cloudy day at Point Reyes...   A great day to experiment with color...

That top shot is the lake at Nicasio, out in west Marin County...   Occasionally in the morning, when conditions are just right, the lake will generate it's own little fog system...   Mix that with sun and you've got a pretty picture...   Other times the lake can be smooth and reflective as a mirror, and luckily, there is a nearby mountain that is usually more than willing to lend it's reflection to the composition...

The Rose Garden in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park is currently putting on quite a show...   --Best entertainment value in town (it's free), and within spitting-distance of the incredible new DeYoung Museum...

mossy tree

Way up on Mt. Tamalpais, near the intersection of Ridgecrest and the Fairfax to Bolinas Road, is a low spot on the ridge...  Fog funnels through this spot like a freight train...   It's usually always wet and drippy up there, even if it isn't foggy...   It's a very mossy place...

Recently I discovered a great spot for bird shots (plus a great panoramic view of the City) -- just inside the north end of the Golden Gate Bridge, at the point at Fort Baker (past Coast Guard Station and past yacht harbor)...   See you there...

surf, Tennessee Cove

click photo for full-size image

It was a gray Sunday morning in March 1853 when the fog lifted just enough to show Captain Mellus of the SS Tennessee that he’d missed the Golden Gate and was about to collide with an unknown shore.   Rather than crash against the rocks, the captain steamed his vessel right up onto the beach at what is now Tennessee Cove.   All 550 passengers (about 100 of whom were women and children) climbed safely off the ship onto dry land.   There was even time to salvage fourteen chests of gold before heavy surf broke the Tennessee’s oak hull to pieces at the southern end of the cove.
I like the top shot, but please tell me which version you prefer...

p.s...   I've just finsihed updating my photos over at Flickr

foggy pines, Hawk Hill

The tallest hill in the vicinity, Hawk Hill (at the top of Conzelman Road), is within spitting distance of the Golden Gate Bridge...   These trees were pretty drippy with fog the morning I stopped by, but I'm sure the hawks enjoy these pines as much as I do...

under Golden Gate Bridge

Well, no, they don't let people wander around underneath the bridge, but I did manage to snap these through a chain link fence from the little catwalk that allows pedestrians and bicyclers to cross under the roadway at the north end of the bridge...   The road noise is deafening, and the whole structure shakes when a large truck passes overhead...

In our state capitol of Sacramento, some of the statues haven't been delivering on their promises...   Governor S. could really make a significant change helping farmworkers by signing Senate Bill 180...

San Rafael Mission

click photo for full-size image

O.k., we're going to have a little test next Friday, so listen up...
San Rafael, California, was named after the Archangel Raphael, who was "God's Healing Messenger"...   La Mission de Gloriosisimo Principe (San Rafael Mission) was the 20th on the Chain of California Missions...   San Rafael Mission was founded by Fray Vicente de Sarria, on December 14, 1817...

By the way, I noticed a sign -- the Sacrament of Penance is every Saturday, 3:30PM to 4:30PM, in case there is anything you need to take care of...

You won't believe this, but at the school right next to the mission, way back behind the building they are storing three huge wooden crosses that they probably use for their Easter pageant...   It was so wierd to just see them laying there on their sides -- like they were waiting to be called into use...   Nightmare material -- kind of disturbing...

As .jpegs, these photos turned out a bit weak, but I tried to jazz them up a bit by saving them in a limited number of colors as .gifs...   Sometimes this works, sometimes it doesn't...   What do you think ?
